The Weekly Donut 1/15/2020

Get ready to indulge in all things food news...

The future of food

Last week was CES, Consumer Electronics Show, and we got to see the intersection of technology and food with some new products:

  • Impossible Foods launches a plant-based pork replacement called, you guessed it, Impossible Pork.

  • Picnic, a startup, brought an AI pizza making robot that whipped up 300 12-inch pizzas per hour.

  • DnaNudge reveals their DnaBand that keeps you away from junk food at the grocery store. First, they test and analyze your DNA. Then, they give you a band that's able to scan food products and can tell you if it's a good match for your biology. I don't think I need a wristband to tell me that donuts aren't good for me but either way, I'm still gonna eat 'em.

Check out other food and kitchen tech that debuted at CES.

You know you want this yummy, yummy all in your tummy

Lemon-Up, Lemon-Up, Lemon-Up, Lemon-Up, Lemon-Up. Girl Scouts announce a new cookie, Lemon-Ups, but Thin Mints will still be our fav. Lemon-Ups, crispy lemon cookies baked with inspiring messages to lift spirits, won't replace Lemonades, even though we feel like having two lemon flavored cookies in the line up is a waste. Anyway, we won't be buying any Lemon-Ups, because we don't think reading, "I am a go getter," on a cookie while we eat a whole box in bed watching Netflix will actually make us feel any better about ourselves...

Pop(corn) Culture

Yeah, you got that yummy-yum, that yummy-yum, that yummy-yummy

It's been one week since Justin Bieber released his song, Yummy, and he's still not done thirsting out on Instagram. The song reached #2 on the Billboard Top 100, and although it's annoyingly catchy, we are into all of the food-inspired artwork we're getting from JB. Oh, and watching Tyler C. dance to Yummy on Tik-Tok wasn't the worst thing either.

Champaign-Gate

This week on The Bachelor, there was a champaign bottle pop heard around the country. Kelsey set up champagne and glasses for her and Peter to enjoy. But this wasn't just any bubbly, it was Dom Perignon that Kelsey got for her birthday and was saving for a special occasion. A la The Bachelor. Little did Hannah Ann know (or did she know?), she opened the bottle with Peter when they saw the set up during their one-on-one time. When Kelsey found out Hannah Ann opened her bottle, she lost it and made such a big scene that went on for the rest of the episode. Basically, Kelsey is bat sh!t crazy and if I were Peter, I'd need a lot of champagne to deal with her. Watch her meltdown here.

Fast Food Frenzy

Snoop Dogg and Dunkin' (still salty they dropped 'Donuts' from their name) collab to give us the "Beyond D-O-Double G Sandwich," but it's only available this week. The sandwich consists of a plant-based Beyond Sausage patty with egg and cheese on a sliced glazed donut. I got my mind on my donuts and my donuts on my mind. Also, Stay tuned for news on a Snoop and Dunkin' pop-up shop that's coming soon 👀

D-word, that's good!

One Million Moms is at it again. After getting a Zola commercial kicked off Hallmark for depicting a gay couple, OMM is now coming for Burger King. The uber conservative group of helicopter moms is not happy that Burger King used the d-word in an ad that came out over 6 months ago. In the ad, Burger King was promoting their Impossible Whopper through a taste test, and one man said, "Damn, that's good," after taking a bite. And spoiler alert, the d-word is DAMN. I have an idea, just don't eat the damn burger Karen.

Baby Yoda made his way to a Star(bucks) galaxy near you in the form of a Frappuccino. According to Disney Food Blog, you can order a Not-So-Secret Secret Baby Yoda Frappuccino, but you can't just say, "one grande Baby Yoda please." You have to order a Matcha Green Tea Frappuccino with caramel drizzle, whipped cream, and topped with caramel crunchies. If Baby Yoda could talk, we're guessing his first word would be, "yum!"
