The Weekly Donut 9/16

Get ready to indulge in all things food news...

Wave your hands in the air like you just donut care

Amazon is testing out a new payment method that allows you to make a purchase with a wave of your hand and we want to officially welcome you to the future. Right now, the payment system is being tested at Amazon's NYC office where employees can buy snacks out of the vending machine via hand scanners. Amazon hopes to roll out this new tech to select Whole Foods by the beginning of 2020. This sounds dangerous considering I get so excited when I see food that I wave my hands uncontrollably.

Something smells a little fishy

You've heard about meatless meat and chickenless chicken, but have you ever heard of shrimpless shrimp?? That's right, Tyson Foods invests in New Wave Foods and their plant-based shrimp and we kinda think this is getting a little out of hand. New Wave Foods, a start-up, created plant-based shrimp made out of seaweed, soy protein, and natural flavors. Next, they plan to recreate crab and lobster in hopes of saving the environment and our marine life.

Speaking of meatless meat...

There has been some confusion as to which aisle to find plant-based meat in at grocery stores and we're lucky that we're not confused cuz we eat meat. There's also been beef between the meat industry and plant-based companies because of the language used in their marketing. The industry wants to stop companies from using the word meat and meat related words to promote products that don't contain meat. So I guess we should start calling veggie burgers furgers? Or maybe vurgers?

I love you so matcha

Cha Cha Matcha, the colorful NYC cafes, launches their e-commerce brand, which currently includes canned iced teas in four different flavors: Matcha Green Tea, Ginger Turmeric Matcha, Half N Half Matcha Lemonade, and Activated Charcoal Matcha. The brand also teamed up with designer Brandon Maxwell to sell a limited-run hoodie to support the Fashion Scholarship Fund. The hoodie will cost you a bit more than a matcha latte though... Next up, they're set to launch canned lattes and matcha powders.

When you've been beanboozled!!

Skittles introduces a new product to get you in the Halloween spirit. Zombie Skittles will make their way to shelves and we're terrified. Flavors will include: Petrifying Citrus Punch, Mummified Melon, Boogeyman Blackberry, Chilling Black Cherry, Blood Red Berry, and Rotten Zombie. Every bag will include these deliciously spooky flavors, but there's a catch... the Rotten Zombie Skittles taste like barf and will be disguised as good guys. Doesn't Skittles already know that I'm in therapy to deal with my trust issues??

Fast Food Frenzy

Going to the drive-thru, yeah yeah yeah

McDonalds is set to acquire Apprente, a tech company, to work on automating their drive-thru process with AI. McDonalds hopes that testing and eventually implementing this technology will cut down on wait times and make them a leading competitor when it comes to the future of fast food. We're curious to know if their AI would get the whole order right from the McDonald's rap.

We're bringin' breakfast back

Wendy's announces that they will be rolling out a breakfast menu nationwide in 2020, but this isn't the first time they've tried to pull off breakfast. In fact, when the fast food chain announced that they are going to try again, their stock fell 11%. Here's to hoping the honey butter chicken breakfast sandwich tastes as good as it sounds.

Who's your Auntie?

Everyone's favorite pretzel joint debuts two new menu items and our mouth is watering. Auntie Anne's is now selling Chicken Bacon Ranch Pretzel Slider Melts and Chicken BBQ Pretzel Slider Melts and that's a mouthful but I'll still make room in my mouth to shove those sandwiches in. Siri, where is the nearest mall?
